Livelihood Generation
We work to set up decentralised handmade production systems. After having worked in the Kullu Valley for over a decade, we are now expanding to the Kangra Valley to generate livelihoods for women artisans. We have started working in multiple artisan groups based in villages in Kangra valley. As a part of the initiative, we have been procuring wool from local herders and engaging with local spinners, dyers, knitters and weavers to train on specific aspects of their craft. Our work in the Kangra valley is generously supported by The Eicher Foundation. Our work has also led to livelihood generation and enhancement for local herders, from whom we have procured wool.
We have also been working to generate livelihoods by decentralising wool processing. Currently most of the wool processing in Himachal is done by wool mills which dot the state. We have been working with like-minded organisations and collaboratives to develop decentralised wool scouring, carding, and combing machines. Decentralising these operations will be of great help in reducing the carbon footprint of wool craft while also generating local employment.
